Description

Crispy, cheesy, melty perfection—these Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs are a nostalgic comfort food mashup with modern ease.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hot Dogs:

  • 4 high-quality hot dog sausages (beef, turkey, or plant-based)

  • 4 soft hot dog buns (brioche or bakery-fresh if available)

For the Cheese Filling:

  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a blend)

  • 4 slices American cheese (for that classic creamy melt)

For Grilling:

  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional, for added crispiness)

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Sliced pickles or jalapeños

  • Caramelized onions

  • Ketchup, mustard, or hot sauce for serving

Substitutions for Dietary Needs:

  • Gluten-free hot dog buns available in most major grocery stores

  • Vegan cheese and veggie hot dogs for plant-based alternatives

  • Low-fat cheese and turkey dogs for a lighter version

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Air Fryer

Set your air fryer to 375°F and allow it to preheat for about 3–5 minutes. This ensures a golden, evenly crisped bun.

Step 2: Prepare the Hot Dogs

If desired, make small crosswise cuts at each end of the hot dog for a decorative “flower” effect and better texture. This also allows the cheese to melt into the hot dog.

Step 3: Assemble the Sandwich Dogs

Open each hot dog bun and place a hot dog inside. Line the inside of each bun with a slice of American cheese. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the hot dog and around it, making sure it sticks to the sides of the bun. Press gently so the cheese melts into all crevices.

Step 4: Butter the Buns

In a small bowl, mix softened butter with mayo for an extra crispy finish (optional but recommended). Spread on the outside of each bun.

Step 5: Air Fry to Crispy Perfection

Place the hot dogs into the air fryer basket, cheese side up. You may need to work in batches depending on the size of your air fryer. Air fry for 6–8 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and slightly golden, and the buns are crisp on the outside.

Step 6: Serve Hot and Melty

Carefully remove with tongs and serve immediately. Garnish with extra toppings if desired.
