Homemade Kool-Aid Licorice Ropes

  • 1 packet Kool-Aid drink mix (flavor of choice)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for added depth of flavor)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk (as needed for consistency)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Kool-Aid Flavoring

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add the Kool-Aid powder and salt, stirring until fully incorporated. Let the mixture simmer for 1-2 minutes, then remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.

Step 2: Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter until smooth. Add the egg and vanilla extract (if using), mixing until well combined. Gradually pour in the cooled Kool-Aid syrup mixture, stirring continuously. Slowly add the dry ingredients to form a dough. If the mixture is too dry, add a tablespoon of milk to help bring it together.

Step 3: Shape the Licorice Ropes

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough into thin ropes, about 1/4 inch in diameter. Cut them into desired lengths (6-8 inches works best). Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, ensuring they have space to expand slightly.

Step 4: Bake and Cool

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the licorice ropes are firm but still slightly soft to the touch. Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. The ropes will firm up more as they cool.

Step 5: Enjoy and Store

Once fully cooled, your homemade Kool-Aid Licorice Ropes are ready to enjoy! Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
